Singapore education system has been described as "World-Leading"; it is managed by the Ministry of Education (MOE) Singapore, which controls state schools receiving government funding, but also has an advisory and supervisory role for private schools. For both private and state schools, there are variations in the extent of autonomy in their curriculum, scope of government aid and funding and admission policy.

Singapore schools are recognised around the world with capable school leaders and teachers; and facilities that are amongst the best in the world.

The main language of instruction in Singapore is English. English is the first language learned by half the children by the time they reach preschool age and becomes the primary medium of instruction by the time they reach primary school.

Although Malay, Mandarin and Tamil are also official languages, English is the language of instruction for nearly all subjects except the official Mother Tongue languages and the literatures of those languages; these are generally not taught in English, although there is provision for the use of English at the initial stages. Certain schools, such as secondary schools under the Special Assistance Plan (SAP), encourage a richer use of the mother tongue and may occasionally teach subjects in Mandarin Chinese. A few schools have been experimenting with a curriculum that integrates language subjects with mathematics and the sciences, using both English and a second language.

MOE aims to help students to realise their own talents, making the best out of their talents and helping them to realise their full potential.  MOE also aims to help students to develop a passion for learning that lasts through life. MOE seeks to help every child find his/her own talents, growing it and enable them to be confident of his/her abilities. MOE encourages students to follow their passions, and promote a diversity of talents among them – in academic fields, and in sports and the arts.

MOE wants to nurture the young who ask questions and look for answers, and who are willing to think in new ways, solve new problems and create new opportunities for the future. MOE also wants to help the young to build up a set of sound values so that they have the strength of character and resilience to deal with life’s inevitable setbacks without being unduly discouraged, enabling them to have the willingness to work hard to achieve their dreams.

For international students wanting to study in a Singapore government school, they would need to pass the Admission Execrise for International Students (AEIS) or the Supplementary Admission Execrise for International Students (S-AEIS).

  • AEIS & S-AEIS

  • AEIS: Admission Exercise for Internationl Students

  • S-AEIS: Supplementary Admission Exercise for International Students

The Admissions Exercise for International Students (AEIS) is a centralised admissions exercise conducted by Ministry of Education (MOE) for new international students who wish to join Singapore mainstream primary and secondary schools.

Please note:
AEIS & S-AEIS is for new international students seeking admission into Primary 2-5 and Secondary 1-3. Ministry of Education generally do not admit students directly into Primary 6 and Secondary 4 as it is for the students’ best interest not to be admitted during these important examination years.

This AEIS is held every year around September or October for enrolment in January of the following year.

AEIS consists of a centralised test on English and Mathematics. Applicants who pass this test will be offered a place in a suitable school subject to the availability of school vacancies and meeting the school’s admission criteria.

However, students who are unable to make it for AEIS and/or are unsuccessful in previous AEIS attempts can take part in the Supplementary Admission Exercise for International Students (S-AEIS) in February.
